Here at Leaders we pride ourselves on creating a community-based retail location that acts as a cross-section for a variety of worlds from music to fashion, sports, art and beyond. Since 2002, when the first store opened on 53rd St. in Hyde Park, our locations have been a bastion for well known figures from in and outside the city to congregate, check out new gear and meet new people in and around the scene. As well, the Leaders brand has seen a steady uptick in national and international recognition as the brand has found its way onto the chests, sleeves and heads of some of the artists, athletes and trend setters around the world.
2014 has been no different here and, as we look to push our blog in a new direction, we wanted to make sure an recap all that has happened so far this year. It being July, it seemed fitting to rewind the year and reminisce over some of the highlights of the past seven months while keeping our eye forward to the future. Click through below to see who and what has made this year already memorable.
Jay made a point to rock plenty of Leaders gear throughout 2014 so far as he has toured first on his Magna Carta Holy Grail release and most recently during the On The Run tour with wife Beyonce. First, he rocked the black Leaders long sleeve onstage during his DirectTV half time performance at the Super Bowl. Later in February, Hova was spotted rocking a grey LDRS crew neck that he later popped up in at this year’s Coachella. That sweatshirt proved to be a favorite as he was seen on several other occasions rocking the joint, including the picture below exiting a private jet with Bey. It’s clear Jay digs his LDRS, photos below (available via @ldrs1354 on Instagram).
Chance The Rapper
Chancelor Bennett has been a frequent customer at Leaders for some time now, but since releasing his now-iconic Acid Rap project on April 30, 2013 he has become arguably one of the most sought after and quickly rising artists in hip-hop and even beyond. The first half of the year really saw young Chano come of age, and true to form he brought his Day One supporters with him. Aside from regularly wearing the Leaders ‘LDRS’ hats in interviews and onstage, the new 21-year-old snuck it into his Arsenio Hall performance at the end of last year, as well as his first meeting with the infamous Nardwuar and in the studio with the likes of Mike Will Made It and Skrillex, among many others. Always ahead of his peers, Chance has stayed repping Leaders on his way to the top.
Taylor Bennett, the 18-year-old younger brother of Chance The Rapper, has made big noise all throughout this year so far. His March 4 release of Mainstream Music found its way to Complex, SPIN and many others and garnered the Jones College Prep graduate a cover photo on The Chicago Reader. A regular since he was, well, a regular as a kid, Bennett hosted a listening party and ticket giveaway at the store on Wells in the lead up to his sold out show at Lincoln Hall and can be seen regularly rocking the LDRS tag. Recently featured in our 2014 Summer Look Book, Bennett continues to be a loyal part of the Leaders extended family.
It’s certainly not just the Bennett’s and Jay rocking Leaders. This year has seen in store visits from the likes of Spenzo, Estelle, Lil Reese, Action Bronson, Fredo Santana and none other than Macklemore who all came through to pick up some gear and show love. Check out some photos of the past few months of visits below and be sure to check back to the blog for continuing updates on what’s happening in the store and beyond!
